Jean Iᵉʳ Montgommery was Count of Ponthieu from 1147 to the death of his father Guy II of Ponthieu. It was he who granted the Abbeville in 1184 a communal charter which granted the inhabitants the right to constitute a commune. In 1130, his grandfather William Talvas (I) had sold this right to the bourgeois but there were no writings and it was not until 1184 that this was realized.
Jean de Ponthieu had a son: Guillaume Talvas (IIème) future Earl of Ponthieu also, just like his great grandfather.
