Ferdinand Foch, Marshal of France, Great Britain and Poland was born in Tarbes in 1851. He distinguished himself during the Battle of the Marne and in Flanders in 1914, directed the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and then commanded the Allied troops He led to victory in 1918.
He died in 1929.
It is in his homage that the rue Saint-Gilles d'Abbeville splits in two: the most outlying part is still called rue Saint-Gilles while the part closest to the center is now called rue du Maréchal Foch .
